Steven Katz was the orchestra director at Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois for 30 years, where he directed over 180 students in four orchestras. In 2007, Niles West received the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Distinction in Arts Education. He also taught guitar and a music appreciation class for autistic students. Prior to his position at NNHS, Steven was the orchestra director in the Batavia, IL and Champaign, IL school districts. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. A frequent clinician and conductor, Katz has conducted the IMEA District 7 Junior Orchestra, the Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp at the University of Illinois and at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. Prior to stepping into the newly created position of IL ASTA Orchestra Fest chair, he served as The Scroll’s content editor for many years. He also previously served as the the high school orchestra vice president for the Illinois Music Educators Association District 7.
