Matthew Nix is an active teacher, freelance cellist, and musician throughout Chicago and Michigan. He is the Director of Orchestras Maine South High School in Park Ridge, IL.
Prior to his arrival in Chicago, Matt was the Orchestra Director at Farmington High School in Metro Detroit, Conductor of the Youth Symphony at the Community Music School of Ann Arbor, and Orchestra Director at Liverpool High School in central New York.
A graduate of the Michigan State University College of Music, Matt earned undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Cello Performance, with Honor. He completed his Masters Degree in Music Education from MSU as a New Directions Fellowship recipient in 2016.
Matt is the 2014 national winner of the George Bornoff Memorial Scholarship, through the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). He is an active member of the Illinois, Michigan, and New York chapters of ASTA, and is also a proud member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME, formerly MENC). He often presents at conferences on scholarly topics, notably at the Michigan Music Conference and the 2018 ASTA National Conference in Atlanta, GA.
Matt is a professional cellist in Chicago and Metro Detroit. He can be found performing in professional symphony orchestras, in chamber groups, and non-classical settings.
